2014 Oscar Predictions: Reader Poll Results

Pencils down, the votes are in, the polls are closed and we have our 2014 Oscar Predictions. What I’ve done below is listed my predictions followed by the predictions from my Oscar live blog partner Laremy Legel, followed by the results from the reader polls I posted on Friday and it looks like there are only a few differences between the lot.

Between Laremy and myself, Laremy is going out on a limb and I would suspect he believes American Hustle is going to somehow find its way onto more #2 and #3 lines than either 12 Years a Slave or Gravity as he has picked the David O. Russell film to take Best Picture while myself and the readership went with 12 Years a Slave. Could end up we’re all wrong and it ends in the hands of Gravity and then won’t we all look foolish.

Laremy also went with American Hustle for Best Original Screenplay while the readership and I went for Spike Jonze‘s Her. I must admit, it’s almost a coin flip at this point and Laremy may have got us on this one as he went, in my opinion, with the less sentimental choice. Has my love of Her clouded my vision?

Then both the readers and Laremy disagreed with me on Best Costume Design as I went with the dark horse 12 Years a Slave, while the readers and Laremy both went for The Great Gatsby. I won’t be surprised either way just as much as I wouldn’t be surprised to see it go to American Hustle.

Next, in a close race, the readers predicted the critical favorite The Act of Killing to take Best Documentary while both Laremy and I went with 20 Feet from Stardom. I can’t say I’d be surprised to see it go to Act of Killing, but after 20 Feet won the Spirit Award last night I really don’t see it losing at the Oscars.

Finally, one of the more interesting races this year is Best Film Editing. The readers went with Gravity while both Laremy and I went with American Hustle, but this is a category where I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Captain Phillips end up the winner. At this point I feel a little less confident in Hustle than I did when I made my predictions, but it’s too late to change it now.

I have published all the results below and highlighted the those where Laremy and the readers differed from my predictions in bold red text. Stay tuned as Laremy and I will be getting started with our Oscar live blogging around 3:30-4 PM PST. Until then, hash out the poll results in the comments below.
