I think we hit a high for the year with 114 reader predictions, I guess that’s what happens when movies people are interested in actually get released.
This week the clear winner will be The Lego Movie, but just how much will it make? The opening record for a February release is The Passion of the Christ with $83.8 million and it’s not hitting that number, but can it steamroll as high as Hannibal‘s at #2 with $58 million? Predictions from both Laremy ($47.5m) and the reader aggregate ($54.1m) say no, but I don’t think any of us would be surprised to see it make a run at Lecter’s legacy.
George Clooney‘s The Monuments Men isn’t getting very good reviews and I don’t think that will help its chances at the box office. Budgeted at $70 million, the reader average is $600,000 more than Laremy’s prediction with $17.4 million. Should be interesting to see what kind of pull Clooney and his men have despite critics not loving the film.
Weinstein’s Vampire Academy, which is so good they bombarded press with press releases rather than a screening of the film is hoping to make some opening weekend dollars and run and Laremy, this time, is on the high side of the readers, predicting $800,000 more than the $7.6 million reader average.
Finally, the lone holdover, That Awkward Moment is sure to drop hard, but just how far as Laremy went with a $4.8 million prediction compared to the readers at $4.2 million. Either way, it’s likely it’s the last we’ll hear of it.
I’ve included Laremy’s predictions and the average reader predictions directly below and I’ll be back on Sunday with box office estimates. To see Laremy’s full list of predictions and all 90 reader predictions for this weekend click here.
