2014 Screen Actors Guild Award Predictions

Tomorrow night, January 18, the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards will be announced and I will be live-blogging the event with winners and bits of commentary here and there and I felt before doing so we might want to take a look at some predictions for the five theatrical categories.

I’ve offered a few words on each category below with my predictions in bold red text.

Best Ensemble

From an ensemble perspective, I think the four acting nominations American Hustle received yesterday morning is just one sign the industry is in the bag for the film, more so than any other. This could go to 12 Years a Slave seeing how it was nominated in three of the categories below vs. only two for Hustle, but voting for tomorrow night’s awards doesn’t end until tonight and I think the winds have shifted for the time being.

  • 12 Years a Slave
  • American Hustle
  • August: Osage County
  • Dallas Buyers Club
  • Lee Daniels’ The Butler

Best Actor

McConaughey is on a role winning both at the Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, but those are two media driven awards shows while the SAGs are the first industry awards we’ll be taking a close look at. Ejiofor has long been looked at as a front-runner, but things have certainly shifted in McConaughey’s favor. Will they shift again tomorrow night?

  • Bruce Dern (Nebraska)
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)
  • Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips)
  • Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club)
  • Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler)

Best Actress

Cate Blanchett will win. There, that’s all there is to say.

  • Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine)
  • Sandra Bullock (Gravity)
  • Judi Dench (Philomena)
  • Meryl Streep (August: Osage County)
  • Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks)

Supporting Actor

Jared Leto seems to be the other acting lock going forward, though the Screen Actors Guild could certainly throw things for a loop if they go another way.

  • Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips)
  • Daniel Bruhl (Rush)
  • Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave)
  • James Gandolfini (Enough Said)
  • Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)

Supporting Actress

Lupita Nyong’o gave a great speech at the Critics Choice Awards last night (watch below) and after seeing it I’m sure the SAGs are hoping she will be announced, but Jennifer Lawrence is clearly a favorite in Hollywood and she just might be able to take this one. As far as I’m concerned, the winner of this award is the one you can expect to go on to win the Oscar.

  • Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle)
  • Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years a Slave)
  • Julia Roberts (August: Osage County)
  • June Squibb (Nebraska)
  • Oprah Winfrey (Lee Daniels’ The Butler)
