2014 Golden Globe Award Winners, Led by ‘American Hustle’

The 2014 Golden Globe Awards are in the bag and the night’s big winner was American Hustle, winning three awards including Best Picture (Comedy/Musical), Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for Amy Adams and Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Lawrence. I thought the film would end up walking home with two additional awards but instead the Best Screenplay award went to, surprisingly, Spike Jonze for Her (very well deserved) and Best Director went to Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity. Neither film won anything else.

One film that continued its rise, however, was Dallas Buyers Club. It was assumed Jared Leto would win Best Supporting Actor, but when Matthew McConaughey was named Best Actor (Drama) it was a bit of a surprise, considering he bested one of the night’s biggest favorites in Chiwetel Ejiofor. It became even more surprising when 12 Years a Slave won Best Picture (Drama), a category Dallas Buyers wasn’t even nominated in and considering it was going up against Gravity, which had already won for Best Director. Oh well, just goes to show attempting to figure out the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and their random awards show is impossible.

I loved seeing Alex Ebert win for Best Score for All is Lost. His was the best of the five nominees in my opinion and I thought for sure it would go to Gravity or 12 Years a Slave. A nice surprise along with the Screenplay win for Her.

Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) won, obviously, and Frozen took home Best Animated Feature, which was also to be expected.

If you want a surprise, I guess you could say the win for The Great Beauty for Best Foreign Language Feature was a surprise as I certainly expected Blue is the Warmest Color to take it, but Beauty is a favorite for many, and I expect its run to continue to an Oscar nomination on Thursday. A win? Eh, not so fast…

As for television. I don’t know what to say. I don’t watch a lot of TV so I don’t really care. I’ve placed those winners on page two and you can see my page for the 2014 Golden Globes right here.

I’ll talk more about tonight’s winners soon enough, but if you missed our live blog of the event click here and relive the magic.
