A Guy, a Girl, a Destroyer, a Tree and a Racoon Walk into a Bar

Walt Disney Pictures just sent over the above first look of the principal characters in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the first Marvel movie to skirt outside the realm of The Avengers and introducing a whole new group of heroes.

Pictured are Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper), Drax The Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).

The film is directed by James Gunn (Slither, Super) and is set to hit theaters on August 1, 2014 and will reportedly be set in the future and feature the team fighting an evil race called the Badoom, and in the process they would supposedly travel back in time and cross paths with some of the Avengers team. Speculation says Thanos, the giant being seen in the post-credits sequence following The Avengers would be in the film and Guardians of the Galaxy would serve as a precursor to The Avengers 2.

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits — Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand — with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Additional members of the cast include Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug) as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker (Days of Thunder) as Yondu, Karen Gillan (“Doctor Who”) as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator) as Korath, Benicio del Toro (Traffic) as The Collector (who was featured in the end credits sequence following Thor: The Dark World), John C. Reilly (Step Brothers) as Rhomann Dey and Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction) as Nova Prime.
