Athar and Baca were tied atop the points leaderboard for several weeks, but neither managed to score a point in that same timeframe while rusty slowly gained ground and this week, by predicting The Hunger Games: Catching Fire exactly correct, he added 5 points to his total and has now taken a two-point lead. Quite fortunate for him I’d say that Catching Fire came in at $26.1 million, almost one million less than Sunday’s estimate.
In first, however, remained Frozen, which came in exactly as estimated with $31.6 million, bringing its domestic total to $134.2 million in only 17 days.
Out of the Furnace dipped only $100,000 from estimates to come in with $5.2 million while our fourth title on the board this weekend, Homefront, finished with $3.4 million.
I also just noticed I accidentally left The Book Thief out of the top ten in yesterday’s report. The Fox film added 82 theaters and is now playing in 1,316 where it scored $2.6 million.
The biggest news of the weekend, in my opinion, is Inside Llewyn Davis releasing in four theaters in NY and LA and bringing in $405,411 for a $101,353 per theater average. Never underestimate the power of the Coen brothers to pack the theaters.
