It looks as though other studios just decided to get out of the way as Thor: The Dark World will get another easy victory this weekend. We’ll tackle its holdover number first, as it looks to be the most compelling number on the board. The original dropped 47 percent on its sophomore weekend all the way back in May of 2011, but I’m calling for a happier (for Marvel) 42 percent dip here, putting the thunder god at $49.7 million. This Marvel Phase 2.0 movie has already cleared $240 million overseas too, so we’re looking at a total north of $600 million once all is said and done.
Next up, the only new wide release, The Best Man Holiday. The film is a sequel, but 14 years removed from the original, so it probably won’t get any appreciable bump. Still, coming from 1999 we can plan on some inflationary help paired with underserved demographic love to boost the film to over $20 million, all the way to $22.5 million. For having only 2,000 theaters, that’s not too shabby. Another factor that will help? The marketing is completely and utterly misleading, which should help get more folks in the theater for the opening weekend. Good times!
As the rest of Hollywood seems to have taken this weekend off, we’ll pick a few more obscure titles to take this thing home. Kill Your Darlings has 70 theaters, but very little buzz, so let’s leave it at $140,000 (that’s 0.14 for those of you predicting along with me) and move on to a title that’s a bit more interesting.
Robert Redford‘s performance in All is Lost is exquisite, but this isn’t a date night film, and it will largely depend on the older crowd to help it earn money. With just under 500 theaters I see it coming in at $1.5 million, your user experience may vary. Academy Award aficionados should take note though, this has Best Man nomination written all over it.
