Box Office Predictions: ‘Bad Grandpa’ Will Send ‘Gravity’ and ‘The Counselor’ Packing

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa is your almost certain victor this weekend, though I don’t expect it to have quite the draw of Jackass 3-D. My reasoning? Pure ageism. Young folks, clearly the intended demographic here, would rather see younger people hurt themselves. Now sure, it’s only Johnny Knoxville in “age face” makeup, but this also seems to be a narrative film, another slight ding against prior success. My number is $28.5 million, five million below tracking.

Next up we’ve got The Counselor, a film I see earning a brutal CinemaScore. Ostensibly, this is a film for adults, though the story comes off as if a rebellious teenager wrote it. Still, even though I’m certain this will eventually fall flat, they have done a halfway decent job of marketing, and there are plenty of name actors for potential ticket buyers to feel comfortable with. It will over-perform, slightly, to the tune of $14.2 million.

Now we’re going to take a little foray into the limited releases because there’s not much happening on the wide front. Wadjda will be our first topic, and it has quite the track record (this is its seventh weekend) for you to draw from, even though it is getting all the way up to 87 theaters. I’ve got it remaining relatively stable, earning $165,000.

Finally, a film I love, so I’m including it, Blue is the Warmest Color. It has so much working against it, being subtitled and almost three hours. I’m calling for $55,000 per theater, four theaters worth (gotta be New York City and Los Angeles, right?) equaling out to $220,000. But really, what number would surprise you here? Both the ground and sky are the limit.

I now turn it over to you, seek the treasure of box office accuracy!

Current Record: 22-47-3 against the wisdom of crowds.
