Box Office Actuals: Leaderboard Updated as ‘Gravity’ Holds at #1 for Second Week in a Row

Gravity‘s second weekend total dropped a little over one million dollars below the Sunday estimate, but it is still enough for the visual effects extravaganza to hold the #1 position for the second weekend in a row by a wide margin. Now up to $122 million domestically and $190 million worldwide, this one may be looking at $250 million or more domestically alone with only a 22.6% drop this weekend and it enjoyed similar small drops around the world.

Box Office Mojo tweets out saying Gravity‘s holdover markets fell an average of 27% including Russia ($4.3M, -42%), Germany ($3.1M, -15%) and Australia ($3M, -11%).

In second remains Captain Phillips with $25.7 million, a strong opening considering the success of Gravity, which pits two adult-themed features opposite one another. The “A” CinemaScore for Phillips should also help its legs moving forward.

It wasn’t such a happy weekend for Machete Kills, however, which did manage to add about $100,000 to its Sunday estimate once actuals rolled in, but at $3.8 million it’s safe to call it a bomb at this point.

Finally, the other title in this weekend’s RopeofSilicon Box Office Challenge was the limited release of Romeo and Juliet and it would appear just as many people were as excited to go see it as I was (note, I skipped the screening) as it brought in $520,116 from 461 theaters for a $1,128 per theater average. Oh well.

It’s a big weekend coming up with the wide release of Carrie, Escape Plan and The Fifth Estate plus the limited release of two Oscar contenders in 12 Years a Slave and All is Lost. Care to offer up any early predictions?

I’ve listed the current top ten for both leaderboards directly below, but you can see the full list of rankings right here and for the complete box office top ten and points awarded for this weekend specifically click here.
