‘Gravity’ Opens with $17.5 Million On Way to $49 Million Weekend

To little surprise, Gravity will be the #1 film this weekend and by a large margin. The long-awaited film brought in $17.5 million on Friday and is now expected to make somewhere around $49 million this weekend, which should place it somewhere within the top five all-time October openings, but not enough to wrestle #1 away from Paranormal Activity 3 ($53.2 million).

Additionally, Gravity scored an “A-” CinemaScore. I’m actually going to go see it again this afternoon at the Seattle Cinerama and if you’ve seen it, I’ve opened a thread right here for you to discuss your thoughts.

The weekend’s other new wide release, Runner Runner, however, wasn’t so impressive in its opening. The Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake “thriller” brought in $2.9 million from 3,026 theaters (500 fewer than Gravity). I doubt things will improve over the weekend given the 8% RottenTomatoes rating and an ugly “C” CinemaScore.

I’ve included the top five for Friday below and will be back tomorrow morning with a complete look at the weekend.

  1. Gravity – $17.5
  2. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 – $4.7
  3. Runner Runner – $2.9
  4. Prisoners – $1.7
  5. Don Jon – $1.42
