I missed this information at the end of last week, but Roadside Attractions has acquired distribution rights to Gimme Shelter, a new film featuring a bit of a change in terms of character for actress Vanessa Hudgens as she’ll play a pregnant teen runaway in the pic, which the studio is set to release on January 24, 2014.
Starring alongside Hudgens is Brendan Fraser, Rosario Dawson, James Earl Jones and Ann Dowd in a film inspired by a David and Goliath true story of Kathy DiFiore’s (played by Dowd) Several Sources Shelters telling the story of 16-year-old Agnes “Apple” Bailey (Hudgens) and her journey from the streets to finding salvation in a suburban shelter for homeless teens.
With provisions of unprecedented comfort, a collective sisterhood connection and female empowerment, the shelter inspires Apple to break the shackles of her past and inspires her to embrace the future with clarity, maturity and hope not only for herself but her unborn child.
The film was written, produced and directed by Ronald Krauss (Amexica), who financed the film through his Day 28 Films banner along with producer Jeff Rice and co-producer Joshua Amir.
In advance of its January release it will have its world premiere at the Heartland Film Festival will it will serve as the opening night film on October 17.
