Box Office Results: Leaderboards Updated as ‘The Butler’ Takes #1 with $24.6 Million

Dropping $400,000 from Sunday estimates, Lee Daniels’ The Butler still remains at #1 for the weekend with $24.6 million as the next move the Weinsteins will navigate is how to maneuver an Oscar campaign.

After The Butler we slide down to fifth where we find Kick-Ass 2, which dropped another $200,000 below estimates to settle down at $13.3 million. While this is a poor result and most likely has Universal execs wondering why they took over the franchise from Lionsgate, given the $28 million production budget it’s not a complete disaster. Similarly, Jobs actuals didn’t move an inch as the film finished with $6.7 million, a disappointing number, but not a nightmare given it was operating with a $12 million budget.

No, the disaster is Paranoia starring Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth, a film credited with having the worst opening for a wide release this summer and the estimates were spot on as it turns out. Paranoia finished the weekend with $3.5 million from 2,459 theaters. Ouch!

That said, I’ve listed the current top ten for both leaderboards directly below, but you can see the full list of rankings right here and for the complete box office top ten and points awarded for this weekend specifically click here.

NOTE: I’ve noticed there are some people that haven’t been predicting recently that are in the accuracy ranking leaderboard top ten and I’m considering ways to punish those that don’t predict versus those that continue to participate, even if that means dropping each participant 1% for each week they don’t participate. I’m open to other suggestions if you have them.
