Box Office Results: Leaderboards Updated as ‘2 Guns’ Tops ‘Wolverine’ and ‘Smurfs 2’

There wasn’t a huge shift in the final box office numbers following yesterday’s estimates, but as always it did change the result of reader predictions ever so slightly.

2 Guns still took the #1 spot with $27 million and HazardousKirby scored five points with an on-the-nose prediction. In second was The Wolverine, which dropped just shy of 60% to $21.3 million, a heavy fall for a film with an “A-” CinemaScore and 68% RottenTomatoes score. What gives? Were reviews and word-of-mouth unable to convince anyone else to go see it?

Opening at a dismal $17.5 million is The Smurfs 2 where Ron Oneal Fresh had the lowest prediction on the board at $18.7 million and took the five point win. Predictions on this title ranged from $18.7-46 million so to say the sequel failed to live up to any kind of expectation is quite the understatement. However, if you’re wondering if Sony will cancel plans for the July 24, 2015 release of The Smurfs 3, guess again, this is a franchise where 75% of the first film’s money came from overseas and it looks like the same will happen this time around.

Finally we get to the small guy, The Spectacular Now where predictions ranged from $120,000-$2.5 million. In the end, the film that opened in only four theaters scored $197,415 for a $49,354 per theater average. This one is going to impact some accuracy ratings, but considering we still have several weeks to go, don’t worry, it won’t affect your total too much since it is an aggregate.

That said, I’ve listed the current top ten for both leaderboards directly below, but you can see the full list of rankings right here and for the complete box office top ten and points awarded for this weekend specifically click here.
