John Williams Returning to Score ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’

Of all the things that go into filmmaking, when it comes to Star Wars: Episode VII the two things I’m most curious about are the screenplay and the production design. Obviously with the prequels the screenplays were lacking and I just felt the world of the prequels was so far removed from that of the original trilogy it didn’t feel like the same franchise. Old school set design, miniatures and creature effects were replaced by CGI and it all had this sheen of perfection to it that ended up feeling incredibly phony.

Of course, one mainstay throughout the first six Star Wars films was the composer and I’d argue John Williams‘ “Duel of the Fates” from Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is one of the very best things to come out of all three prequels. So, upon hearing the news he’ll return to score the next three Star Wars films for director J.J. Abrams you won’t get any complaint out of me.

The announcement was made at the “Star Wars Celebration” in Germany and StarWars.com released the following video, featuring the Oscar-winning composer discussing his return.

In other Star Wars news, the 2015 “Star Wars Celebration” will be held in Anaheim in April 2015, ahead of what is expected to be a May 2015 release for Episode VII.
