Official First Look at Matthew McConaughey in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’

So there have been a ton of paparazzi pictures floating around the Internet featuring an emaciated Matthew McConaughey as he portrays real-life Texas electrician Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club, an ordinary man who found himself in a life-or-death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies.

In 1985, Ron was blindsided with an HIV diagnosis and given 30 days to live. With medications still restricted in the US and the country still divided over how to combat the virus, Ron procured non-toxic alternative treatments from all over the world through both legal and illegal means. To avoid government sanctions against selling non-approved medicines and supplements, Ron established a “buyers club” for fellow HIV-positive people, giving them access to his supplies.

Dallas Buyers Club is directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (The Young Victoria) and has already been picked up by Focus for release on December 6, so you can be sure all eyes will be on this one when it makes its world premiere at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival.

McConaughey has become a hot ticket as of late after his work in Killer Joe, Magic Mike and Mud, but this is the one people are targeting for his likely first Oscar nomination. McConaughey has used this burst in popularity to really forward his career with a small role in Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf of Wall Street later this year and the lead role in Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar next year.

Co-starring in Dallas Buyers Club are Jennifer Garner, Gael Garcia Bernal, Steve Zahn and Jared Leto.
