Spike Lee Answers a Few Questions Regarding His Kickstarter Project

This morning the latest big name filmmaker took to Kickstarter to fund his next project (check out the project here). This time it’s Spike Lee and he’s looking to follow-up on his upcoming studio feature, a remake of Chan-wook Park’s Oldboy (10/25) based on the Japanese manga of the same name, with a film wholly funded via the crowd-sourcing website.

He gives very few details on the project on his Kickstarter page, of which he’s set a $1.25 million goal, describing it as a film about “human beings who are addicted to blood. Funny, sexy, and bloody (and it’s not Blacula)…” Sounds to me like it may be some kind of political farce since he seems to be suggesting it’s not a vampire feature, but who knows…

As a result, I reached out to Lee in an email looking for more information on the plot, financing, distributiong and to ask about detractors who might say things such as “Don’t contribute, he has access to money” and “Why doesn’t he just pay for it?”

Here’s his response:

I Think Warner Bros Owns Veronica Mars And Zack Braff Ain’t Going To The Poor House Either. I’m Rolling With The People Who Have Supported Me And My Films. The Detractors? HATERS GONNA HATE And May They Go With God. We Do Not Have Any Distributors Yet And I Went To Straight To Kickstarter. Did Not Seek Any Other Financing. And I Did Contribute, I Just Pledged $10,000 To Buy Myself A Dinner And Sit Next To Myself Courtside At The World’s Most Famous Arena-Madison Square Garden To See The Beloved New York Knicks.

The last line of that is in relation to the highest reward Lee offers to the one contributor who ponies up $10,000. Otherwise, he’s taking a very similar approach to that of Zach Braff, who made it clear he was primarily targeting those that have supported his work and wanted to see another film from him. Of course, the absence of any details on the project, of which Lee did not offer any further information when I asked (including asking if he had written the screenplay himself), might be a hang-up for some people.

As of now the project has generated $15,646 from 287 backers. Below is the video Lee put together to sell prospective contributors. You planning on investing? You can find the project here and watch Lee’s pitch video below.
