Watch as Zack Snyder Announces Batman and Superman Movie at Comic Con

This is Comic Con in a nutshell. Just watch as Man of Steel director Zack Snyder plays to the audience and brings out Harry Lennix to read a famous passage from Frank Miller‘s “The Dark Knight Returns”.

Afterward, the room goes dark and the Superman logo appears, and there’s a smattering of applause. What’s this? It would seem most in the audience didn’t recognize the quote, or perhaps a Man of Steel 2 isn’t something to get too excited about.

Then… Ohhhhh, then… Then the Batman logo lights up in the background and pandemonium sets in.

Comic Con is a promise of what is to come and for me it exhibits the trend in these fanboy(girl) franchises that is predicated on what’s next rather than what’s here and now. The studios have essentially forced themselves to play by a similar game. It’s not about making one great film, it’s about making one film that will be received well enough to make more of them. It’s about making a movie where the post-credits sequence can promise what’s to come and ensure the franchise doesn’t stop before it’s started.

While I can certainly understand the excitement from a comic book fan’s perspective over a film that features both Batman and Superman, after everything Zack Snyder has directed, I guess all I’m wondering is whether or not he’s the one you want guiding this next project, especially with Christopher Nolan stepping further into the background with merely an exec producer credit?

What also is a little funny is I would bet the majority of these fans poked fun at Twilight fans for their excitement in seeing Edward and Bella up on the big screen. Funny how that works.
