What I Watched, What You Watched #199

It is impossible for me to believe next weekend will mark the 200th edition of the “What I Watched” feature on this site and I absolutely love how much it has grown over the last year or so, especially after I almost scrapped it altogether. So, to that I say, Thank you for keeping movie discussion alive and kicking on this site!

As for what I watched this week, it was a massive week for me. Here’s the list:

  • The Heat
  • The Lone Ranger
  • Despicable Me 2
  • Shoot the Piano Player (dir. Francois Truffaut)
  • Gasland (dir. Josh Fox)
  • Gasland Part II (dir. Josh Fox)
  • The Third Man (dir. Carol Reed)
  • Death Rides a Horse (dir. Giulio Petroni)
  • They Live (dir. John Carpenter)
  • The Beach (dir. Danny Boyle)

On Saturday I was doing a little work and watched about 75% of The Third Man on TCM. I hadn’t seen the film for a few years and it was a great one to revisit.

I also want to make special mention of Death Rides a Horse, which I had to watch on YouTube since a version with the proper aspect ratio (2.35:1) can’t be found anywhere. I have no idea why studios don’t release brand new, restored editions of movies that inspire Quentin Tarantino when he releases the movies they directly inspired.

In this case, Death Rides a Horse could have been re-released alongside either Kill Bill: Volume 1 or Django Unchained. The former features the theme music in the House of Blue Leaves scene as seen below and as for Django, Death is one of Tarantino’s favorite spaghetti westerns. Why MGM and Fox Home Entertainment wouldn’t use this to their advantage is beyond me, especially since this is one of the best Westerns I’ve ever seen. It, quite literally, has everything. I urge you to give it a watch.

Now it’s your turn, what did you watch? Oh, and be sure and keep the new “What are You Watching?” column alive by sharing what you’re looking to watch over the weekend. That article will be posted every Friday going forward.
