I‘m still cleaning up around the edges after my early 2014 Oscar predictions and today’s update takes a look at the Best Supporting Actress category where I was shocked to find I didn’t even have Oprah Winfrey (The Butler) on the list. And along with Winfrey I’ve added five more new contenders bringing the total to 27 with a lot of movement all over the board.
In the top five, however, my #1 remains the same as I see Amy Adams getting her fifth Oscar nomination for David O. Russell‘s American Hustle and finally taking home the hardware.
Cameron Diaz (The Counselor) slips down a notch, Julia Roberts (August: Osage County) moves up a slot and Winfrey debuts at #5 for what would be her second Oscar nomination after her nomination in 1986 for Steven Spielberg‘s The Color Purple.
The biggest move on the board is Carey Mulligan moving from #20 up to #4 for her work in Joel and Ethan Coen‘s Inside Llewyn Davis. I’ve seen Llewyn Davis and Mulligan is fantastic in it and delivers a performance and a character people will be talking about afterward. In my review from Cannes I commented on her performance saying, “[S]he’s just as talented at spitting verbal hellfire in Davis’ vicinity as she is at well-timed moments of tenderness.” Read the full review here.
