I was nervous Laremy’s The Purge to finish second with $15 million and it’s already gone and topped that number in its first 24 hours.
After opening at midnight on Thursday, where the film brought in $3.4 million, the Universal horror/thriller added another $13.3 million over the course of Friday for an opening day total of $16.7 million on its way to a likely $35-40 million weekend. The kicker, the budget was only $3 million.
By comparison it was Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson‘s The Internship that missed the mark as the Shawn Levy-directed feature brought in only $6.6 million on Friday and should end the weekend around $18 million.
The Internship will be battling with Fast & Furious 6 and Now You See Me for that #2 slot as both brought in around $6 million on Friday.
Here’s the Friday top five courtesy of Gitesh Pandya, I’ll be back tomorrow with the weekend box office wrap-up:
- The Purge $16.7 million
- The Internship $6.6 million
- Fast & Furious 6 $6.1 million
- Now You See Me $6 million
- Epic $3.6 million
