Hans Zimmer has been an impressive composer for some time now and while I’d like to say his work with Ridley Scott (Black Hawk Down, Gladiator) put him on the map, his work with Christopher Nolan vaulted him into the stratosphere when he composed the scores for Batman Begins (alongside James Newton Howard), The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. Now, no surprise, he’ll be reteaming with Nolan for his upcoming sci-fi feature Interstellar.
While you could easily say Nolan’s Inception was a sci-fi film, it seems rather clear Interstellar‘s time travel, alternate dimensions and wormhole travel is far more in the realm of what we think of when we talk sci-fi and for that matter, it will be the first “truly” science fiction film Zimmer has scored.
The news came in an interview with Collider where Zimmer, who composed the recent score for Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel, confirmed his involvement and said, “I wrote something [for Interstellar]… and I’m writing that. So, yes, we have started.”
Little is known about the film, which will star Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine, but the script is based on scientific theories developed by a Kip Thorne, a theoretical physicist, a gravitational physicist and astrophysicist at Caltech. Like Inception, the story is said to be “complex and multi-layered”.
A copy of the screenplay has started floating around as well as an early copy of the screenplay titled Flora’s Letter, which also serves as the film’s production title. I haven’t read or received either, but I have to admit, I’d be interested if any of you happen to have a copy and want to send it along.
Interstellar is currently set for a November 11, 2014 release.
