Mini-Review:
“Super Friends” doesn’t age particularly well, but it’s a lot of fun to revisit. I used to watch it religiously on Saturday mornings. Now I’m showing it to my kids for the first time and they love it.
A couple of things struck me about these episodes. The first were all the new heroes made for the cartoons – El Dorado, Apache Chief, Samurai, and Black Vulcan. They gave the cast a bit more diversity as well as international appeal. I wonder now why they haven’t appeared in the DC comics more. Maybe rights issues with Hanna Barbera?
The other thing that really struck me was an episode where Bizarro sucks Superman, Wonder Woman, and Samurai into a video game. They must play a game of Asteroids. But even more hilarious is watching Superman and Wonder Woman battling Pac Man. I kid you not. He’s tweaked just a little, but he’s unmistakably Pac Man. It’s hilarious to see this clash of the pop icons.
This is a great DVD for comics fans and anyone looking to complete their “Super Friends” collection.
Unfortunately there are no significant bonus features here. There are some digital comics, but they were unreadable on my screen. Maybe there was a way to blow them up, but I didn’t see it.
