Captain America: The Winter Soldier began production in Los Angeles today and Marvel and Disney issued the above image commemorating the first day of shooting. The production will also set up shop in Cleveland and Washington D.C. under the direction of Anthony and Joe Russo.
Chris Evans returns as the title character with the film picking-up where The Avengers left off, as Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.
Additional members of the cast include Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The First Avenger) as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill, Frank Grillo (Zero Dark Thirty) as Brock Rumlow and Georges St-Pierre (Death Warrior) as Georges Batroc, Hayley Atwell (Captain America: The First Avenger) as Peggy Carter, Toby Jones (The Hunger Games) as Arnim Zola, Emily VanCamp (Revenge) as Agent 13 and Maximiliano Hernández (Thor) as Agent Jasper Sitwell.
Captain America 2 is set for an April 4, 2014 release and will follow as the third Avengers franchise film following the massive success of The Avengers as “Phase Two” of Marvel’s cinematic franchise will begin this summer with Iron Man 3 on May 3, 2013 followed by Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013.
Filming in Cleveland at the Lorian Road Bridge is expected to begin in the next week or so with extras already being sought.
