This Sunday, everyone is expecting Searching for Sugar Man to take home the Best Doctumentary Feature award at the 2013 Oscar. This comes as no surprise, but what may surprise you about the Oscar nominated feature is that director Malik Bendjelloul told CNN Money that he ran out of money as he neared the end of the production and ended up completing the movie on his iPhone using the 8mm Vintage Camera app.
Bendjelloul said:
I started shooting this with a Super 8 camera, like real film, which is pretty expensive stuff, and I completely ran out of money… It was very few shots left, but I needed those shots, and one day I realized there was this $1 app here on my iPhone and I tried it and looked basically the same as the real stuff.
You can watch the interview below, and if you’ve seen the film you should have a pretty good idea of just which scenes Bendjelloul used the app for, though perhaps not which scenes exactly.
The 2013 Oscars take place this Sunday, February 24 and we will be here live-blogging the entire show. We hope you’ll joins us. For my current Oscar predictions, click here.
