In To the Wonder I wrote, “It presents nuggets of ideas and leaves them for you to interpret.” I added, “There’s nothing to say regarding the performances unless smiling, gazing in the distance or seductive glances are considered acting. The actors are nothing more than pieces of Malick’s landscape doing as he wishes. They are the pretty people in a world where the sun is eternally on the horizon, its rays glancing over a shoulder, between the leaves in a tree or through a hole in the fence.”
This first trailer for the film, which will be released by Magnolia Pictures on April 12, 2013, does a good job capturing most of what I mention above and should be looked at quite explicitly when it comes to what you should expect going in.
Here’s the synopsis for the film followed by the trailer:
After visiting Mont Saint-Michel — once known in France as the Wonder — at the height of their love, Marina (Olga Kurylenko) and Neil (Ben Affleck) come to Oklahoma, where problems soon arise. Marina makes the acquaintance of a priest and fellow exile (Javier Bardem), who is struggling with his vocation, while Neil renews his ties with a childhood friend, Jane (Rachel McAdams). Written and directed by Terrence Malick, To the Wonder is an exploration of love in its many forms.
