What I Watched, What You Watched #172

It was an interesting week of movies for me in that I had watched only one movie until last night when my fiancee and I watched Love Actually, then caught the final hour of A Few Good Men on Bravo, which we then responded to by grabbing the first season of “The West Wing” before watching what turned out to be a not-so-good episode of “Saturday Night Live“, though that cold “Silent Night” opening was fantastic and a grade-A moment of class.

Otherwise, the week was filled with watching sports, reading and relaxing as I finally finished Peter Biskind‘s “[amazon asin=”0684862581″ text=”Down and Dirty Pictures”]”, which I actually began reading in Toronto in April and finished the final 250 pages this week. Yes, the time I find for reading is that sporadic. I do, however, recommend whole-heartedly reading that book if you are any kind of movie fan as it depicts the rise of Sundance and Miramax and all the dirty little details involving the process along with stories of the rise of filmmakers such as Steven Soderbergh and Quentin Tarantino.

The other movie I watched was the first film in Godfrey Reggio‘s Qatsi Trilogy, Koyaanisqatsi. The film was rich and beautiful, but as much as I wish I could celebrate Philip Glass’ score and the experience itself, after seeing here). Films such as this must be seen on the largest screen you can find or risk not being experienced. At the very least the first time seeing them should be in such a manner.

Following my screening of Samsara I watched Ron Fricke‘s previous film, Baraka, at home and it felt like lesser work. The experience just wasn’t the same. You don’t shoot a film like that in 70mm and capture such glorious imagery only to watch it on such a small screen.

Now it’s your turn. I know some of you already weighed in with your thoughts on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, but I also know you watched more than just that and some of you may have even held your thoughts on that film for this post. So have at it, the comment section is yours.
