Just skimming through this trailer it looks like Guillermo del Toro has delivered something of a Transformers versus Godzilla versus Cloverfield with a dash of Real Steel mash-up with his new film Pacific Rim.
In a nutshell, the studio-provided synopsis tells us the film is set amid a war in which humans face off against giant ocean monsters and are ultimately in need of the help of massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. Unfortunately, even the robots aren’t helping. Then it turns out a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) are teamed together to save the world.
I’ve heard the script for this one is good, so I have to assume they are trying to sell spectacle over anything else with this preview.
The trailer will be playing in front of screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey this weekend and the film hits theaters on July 12.
