Friday Box-Office: ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2’ Opens Big, ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Lincoln’ Remain Strong

It’s always fascinating when a film can bring in $71.2 million on its opening day and not match expectations, but that’s the case with The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, which don’t get me wrong, is a massive hit in its own right, I just thought the final film in the franchise would be able to perform better than the previous installments.

It would appear this is a franchise that maxed out its audience already and the $135 million range is what it’s good for on opening weekend and the $700 million range is what it’s good for overall worldwide. These are great and dependable numbers, but just imagine if it had been able to gain new fans along the way.

It is also worth noting that should that opening day estimate hold it will be the sixth highest opening ever with both Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and New Moon just slightly ahead of it.

International reports have Breaking Dawn pulling in $38.8 million from 27 foreign territories on Friday.

In second, Skyfall brought in an estimated $12.3 million and should be looking at a $40 million weekend, which would put it down only 53% or so from its massive $88.3 million opening.

And in third Lincoln is doing quite nicely as it expanded to 1,775 theaters this weekend and brought in an estimated $6.3 million on Friday, which should easily find it bringing in $20+ million for the weekend. Audiences gave both Breaking Dawn and Lincoln “A” Cinemascores, but it will be interesting to note which one will likely hold on stronger as Lincoln has more expanding to do and Breaking Dawn can only go down after being released in 4,070 theaters.

Additionally, Silver Linings Playbook opened in only 16 theaters and pulled in $120,000, which should end up somewhere around $400,000 for the weekend and a decent $25,000 per theater average, though that’s nothing compared to Lincoln‘s $85,846 per theater average from last weekend when it opened in only 11 theaters.

You’ll also notice the Bollywood film Jab Tak Hai Jaan, which brought in $367,000 from only 161 theaters. The film comes with a score from AR Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) and stars Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma. Will it be able to finish in the top ten?

I’ve included Friday’s estimated top ten directly below and will be back tomorrow with a complete wrap-up.
