The First Director Rumored for ‘Star Wars: Episode 7’ Is…

I have done my best to keep Star Wars: Episode VII stories to a minimum around here as I could probably now run three a day and still be behind the rest of the movie blogs chattering every rumor and speculative piece they can come up with to get more traffic, but Collider seems to have been rather reputable when it comes to industry rumors and a source that doesn’t necessarily print something they aren’t at least confident there is some measure of truth. So, with that we have word Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Stardust and X-Men: First Class) has been offered the director’s chair on the new film.

The logic of the rumor makes sense considering Vaughn recently dropped out of directing X-Men: Days of Future Past with word he was opting to do another film for Fox rumored to be the drama Secret Service, an adaptation of the Mark Millar comic book series he’d been working on with the author. Could a new Star Wars film been the real reason? After all, Vaughn’s departure came only five days before the announcement of the new Star Wars film and Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm?

The hard thing with rumors related to this new Star Wars film is the speed in which it was all announced and the plan to have Episode VII in theaters by 2015. Considering what we’re talking about here that isn’t exactly too far off so it would make sense Disney and Lucasfilm would be trying to get someone attached sooner rather than later.

I expect I’ll save most of the future Star Wars rumors for Kevin’s Morning 5 articles, but I felt this was one worth posting. What do you think? With everyone speculating it would be Brad Bird to direct the new feature, how does Vaughn fit in with the franchise in your mind?
