Friday Box-Office: ‘Wreck-It Ralph’ and ‘Flight’ Both Open Strong

If you are looking for reason to be confident in movies at the moment just take a look at this Friday’s box-office numbers as both Wreck-It Ralph and Flight opened extraordinarily strong.

We’ll begin at #1 where Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph pulled in $13.4 million from 3,752 theaters along with an “A” Cinemascore from those in attendance. The film is likely to bring in more than $50 million this weekend and, as I said in my review, the franchise potential is quite obvious with this one.

In second and in almost 2,000 fewer theaters, the Denzel Washington led drama not me unfortunately) enjoying it, audience support is the cherry on top.

There looks to be a tangle for the third and fourth slots as RZA‘s directorial debut The Man with the Iron Fists brought in an estimated $3 million, just slightly edging out Ben Affleck‘s Argo. I expect Argo will end up in third as Iron Fists is a film more for fans that like to attend Friday night screenings and the “C+” Cinemascore doesn’t sound as if they’ll be telling their friends to see it.

I have included the complete Friday top ten below and will be back Sunday morning with a wrap-up of the weekend.

  1. Wreck-It Ralph – $13.4 million
  2. Flight – $8.1 million
  3. The Man with the Iron Fists – $3 million
  4. Argo – $2.9 million
  5. Taken 2 – $1.8 million
  6. Cloud Atlas – $1.5 million
  7. Paranormal Activity 4 – $1.4 million
  8. Hotel Transylvania – $1.1 million
