In my predictions I had 17 animated films that looked like they would be contending for Best Animated Feature at this year’s Oscars. Of those 17, all but one made the final list of what turned out to be 21 total films.
Disney’s joint effort with UTV Pictures, Arjun: The Warrior Prince, did not make the final list despite word it would be getting an Oscar qualifying run. My assumption is the fact the film was available on Netflix Instant before it ever had that run, which would make it ineligible, but unfortunately I was unable to get anyone from Disney on the phone for confirmation before posting this article.
As for the five new films I hadn’t previously counted on, they include Adventures in Zambezia, Delhi Safari, Hey Krishna, The Mystical Laws and Walter & Tandoori’s Christmas. At this moment I don’t have any information on these five films, but I have already collected trailers for them and will get to work looking for additional information as soon as I hit submit on this post and get that to you as soon as I can.
I don’t know what the record number of films to qualify is, but this has to be close if not the record. Looking at the last five years, this is the largest field I have ever seen as the 2008 Oscars saw 19 films.
