I didn’t really want to report on this because I don’t really have much to say as finding a point of entry that’s interesting is difficult considering this year’s The Amazing Spider-Man was so “blah“.
I could get all grouchy and complain how disappointing it is to read The Descendants star Shailene Woodley has decided to forward her career by playing Mary Jane in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but that’s just to beat a dead horse. I could say how tiring it is to read that once again Harry Osborn, Peter Parker’s best friend and eventual enemy, will also play a role in the film.
Both characters were central to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy — played by Kirsten Dunst and James Franco — which only sputtered out five years ago.
I guess the news someone named Electro may be the film’s villain is interesting. Apparently this guy gets hit by lightning and can then control electricity. Not sure why he becomes a villain, but I bet it has something to do with daddy issues, being picked on at school or just generally being misunderstood. As Variety‘s Jeff Sneider and Justin Kroll point out, lightning featured prominently in the post-credits scene in the first film and may suggest the character’s involvement.
As of now, Woodley will join Andrew Garfield and most likely Emma Stone for the sequel, which is set to hit theaters on May 2, 2014. Stone, however, has not yet been confirmed for the cast, but Garfield and director Marc Webb are confirmed to return.
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are penning the script based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt with additional work supplied by Jeff Pinkner.
