While Beasts of the Southern Wild licks its wounds upon hearing the news its actors won’t be eligible for a Screen Actors Guild Award because the film didn’t use professional actors or some nonsense like that, Fox will hope to generate some award buzz through a just announced DVD and Blu-ray release on December 4. Get the details on the Blu-ray release right here.
The last two Oscar link round-ups have included costume talk, so why not point you in the direction of Vogue where Tom Ford discussed dressing Daniel Craig for Skyfall:
“I worked with Jany Temime [Skyfall‘s costume designer] on creating the perfect classic wardrobe. I have been dressing Daniel for some time and know that he looks best when simply dressed, so we did some beautiful suits, tuxedos and daywear. We didn’t really modify our suits, as James Bond is a bit like our guy – classic and extremely elegant.”
Ford also provided Bond’s dapper look in Quantum of Solace and you can read another interview with him in Mode magazine here.
I recently placed Rise of the Guardians in the #2 slot in my just revealed first round of Best Animated Feature Oscar predictions. The film has already been announced as an upcoming recipient of the Hollywood Animation Award at the 16th Annual Hollywood Film Awards and you can add another award to that list as the Rome Film Festival will bestow upon Guardians the inaugural Vanity Fair International Award for Cinematic Excellence.
The film doesn’t hit theaters until November 21 and will have two awards to its name by the time it does. Considering the way the Annie Awards tend to favor DreamWorks releases I feel that won’t be the end of it before it comes time to decide on an ultimate favorite for Oscar.
Over at Movie City News, their collection of Oscar prognosticators known as the Gurus o’ Gold place Ben Affleck’s Argo in the #1 slot for a Best Picture win. I currently have it at #2 on my list, but even that seems generous while Tom O’Neil and Scott Feinberg (The Hollywood Reporter) place a bet over whether or not Life of Pi will even be nominated.
Jeff Wells adds his two cents when it comes to Pi, taking a comment from Indiewire’s Eric Kohn saying Life of Pi “seems destined for the Hugo slot” in the Best Picture race. Having only seen snippets of the trailer (and anxiously awaiting a chance to see the film), I can’t comment for myself, but it’s a comparison I can understand, but hope it lives up to being more than that.
If you missed my round up of Pi reviews out of the New York Film Festival, you can find those here.
Finally, Jack Black commented on Seth MacFarlane being Vulture. While Black may seem like an odd person to even ask about the choice, he’s out shilling in an attempt to get a nomination for his performance in Richard Linklater’s Bernie. The interview has gained some attention because some people can’t seem to detect sarcasm, but I thought it was rather funny and offered a chance to include the “Family Guy” clip.
Katie Van Syckle: “What do you think of Seth MacFarlane hosting the Oscars?”
Jack Black: “Where did I see him? I saw him on Saturday Night Live. I thought he was serviceable. It might get tiring if he keeps on doing the voices from Family Guy. He might give that a rest. But I think he has legit comedy chops. The way you asked that question seems to suggest you are not a fan of his.”
KVS: “No, I was just trying to ask it provocatively.”
JB: “Well, I should be against him. I should say he is going to fuck it up because he made fun of me one time on his show, and it made me really mad.”
KVS: “On what show? Where did he make fun of you?
JB: “I don’t remember exactly, but it was basically pigeonholing who I am as saying that I am just a guy that relies on being really loud.”
KVS: “But this film proves otherwise, right?”
JB: “Yeah, fuck him. I still haven’t seen the fuzzy-bear movie. Have you?”
I’ve included the “Family Guy” clip Black was referring to below and just as an added factual tidbit, it comes from the 2007 episode “Believe It or Not, Joe’s Walking on Air”, which aired almost five years ago to the day.
