Oscar Update: Denzel’s ‘Flight’ Lands in New York and Karen O Adds Originality to ‘Frankenweenie’

While DreamWorks released the Lincoln earlier this week, I’m told a trailer is still a ways off. So, as we inch closer to the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals, the awards season is only beginning to rev its engines, which is why updates are few and far between for the time being.

Yet, there have been a couple of news bits to share, the first being the announcement Robert Zemeckis‘ new film Flight will have its world premiere when it serves as the closing night film at the New York Film Festival on October 14. The film stars Denzel Washington as an airline pilot who miraculously crash-lands his plane after a mid-air catastrophe, but after doing so questions concerning who’s at fault begin to percolate.

I’ve seen some including Flight in their Best Picture predictions as a potential contender and response to the first trailer was quite positive. Could the placement at the NYFF be a sign of good things to come before the film’s November 2 release?

Secondly, it was announced today Karen O, who gained attention in recent years for her work on the soundtrack for Where the Wild Things Are and her remake of “The Immigrant Song” with Trent Reznor for David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, has created an original song for Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie titled “Strange Love”. And, like I said, it’s original and not a remake of the Depeche Mode song.

A full Frankenweenie! Unleashed disc was announced today and on it are several original songs and one cover, but of the bunch only the Karen O. song will be eligible for an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song as it will play over the end credits. The rest of the tracks listed below are simply “inspired by” songs.

Here’s the full tracklisting:

  1. “Strange Love” – Karen O
  2. “Electric Heart (Stay Forever)” – Neon Trees
  3. “Polartropic (You Don’t Understand Me)” – Mark Foster
  4. “Almost There” – Passion Pit
  5. “Pet Sematary” – Plain White T’s
  6. “With My Hands – Kimbra
  7. “Everybody’s Got a Secret” – AWOLNATION
  8. “Immortal” – Kerli
  9. “My Mechanical Friend” – Grace Potter featuring The Flaming Lips
  10. “Lost Cause” – Imagine Dragons
  11. “Underground” – Grouplove
  12. “Building a Monster” – Skylar Grey
  13. “Witchcraft” – Robert Smith
  14. “Praise Be New Holland” – Winona Ryder

For now, that’s all I have in terms of Oscars, but I expect more and more as we get closer to Telluride, Venice and Toronto and after that it will be fast and furious.
