Voice of Bane, Sound of The Bat Explored in ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Sound Featurette

Only The Dark Knight Rises and pretty much pushed aside the chance the film had in the sound and/or score department. A day later and what do you know, Soundworks Collection has put together a fantastic, nine-minute featurette featuring composer Hans Zimmer and supervising sound editor and sound designer Richard King discussing the sound and music of the film.

King goes into the sound of Bane’s voice and even goes so far as to say they didn’t monkey with Tom Hardy‘s voice too much despite messing with it a little in the beginning, which may have been what people were hearing when the prologue played with Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. He also discusses what he refers to as the “Five ‘Food’ Groups” that make up the sound of Batman’s The Bat. The five groups are described as Jet, Blade, Growl, Buzz Flange and Bat Moan and you get to listen to each isolated and you are sure to recognize the sounds from the film.

Zimmer adds a lot to the discussion as we get a look at his studio and what he was working with. He talks about how computers have allowed him to pretty much play every single note in the score, but he adds, “Technology doesn’t make things faster, it makes things slower, if anything, because you have endless possibilities. Plus you have to learn to deal with it so it doesn’t drive you.”

The best comes at the very end, however, when Zimmer says he believes the last eight years have been the destination he’s been looking for for since he was a child. But he also says how he mentioned to director Christopher Nolan, “Now the problem is what do I have to look forward to?”
