‘Dark Knight Rises’ Earns an Estimated $75 Million on Opening Day

While Warner Bros. has made the understandable decision to not report box-office numbers until Monday, rival studios have given Variety an early estimate for The Dark Knight Rises at $75 million, the third highest opening day of all-time behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ($91.1 million) and The Avengers ($80.8 million).

In the wake of the tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado, Warner Bros. released a statement yesterday saying:

Out of respect for the victims and their families, Warner Bros. Pictures will not be reporting box office numbers for The Dark Knight Rises throughout the weekend. Box office numbers will be released on Monday.

Rentrak and other studios have made the same decision so I will not be reporting any box-office numbers until Monday as a result after this final update.

The pic is said to be tracking to a $170 million three-day opening which would put it second only to The Avengers and first in terms of films that don’t take advantage of a 3-D surcharge.
