Banner for ‘Gangster Squad’ Premieres

Ruben Fleischer‘s Gangster Squad is set to hit theaters on September 7 and Warner Bros. has finally dropped a piece of advertisement art, but I can’t say it’s doing much for me. Instead all I see are four more opportunities for the studio to release character posters, which will then likely culminate in a domestic poster that somehow morphs all four of these images together. That’s fine, but everything about the marketing and release date movement for this film smells of trouble to me.

Set in Los Angeles, 1949, Gangster Squad is based on Paul Lieberman’s seven-part “Tales From the Gangster Squad” series centered on the Los Angeles Police Dept.’s struggle with increasing crime and corruption in the 1940s, when the department formed the Gangster Squad to keep East Coast organized crime figures from planting roots.

The film features a massive ensemble cast that includes Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Michael Pena, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi, Holt McCallany, Emma Stone, Robert Patrick, Mireille Enos, Nick Nolte, Troy Garity and Frank Grillo.

I’ve featured the following trailer before, but I’d figure I’d give you another look at it. Let me know what you think. Will this one live up to what we thought it could be when it was announced or has the approaching release date given you pause?
