This is a bit of an out-of-the-blue stunner. Earlier today Liz Smith posted a story reporting writer/director Nora Ephron (When Harry Met Sally…, Sleepless in Seattle) was “gravely ill” and “not expected to make it through the night” and now Variety reports she has passed away at the age of 71 due to what is being reported as a battle with leukemia.
Over the course of her career Ephron was nominated for three Oscars for screenplays for When Harry Met Sally… and Sleepless in Seattle and Silkwood and she last wrote and directed the Amy Adams and Meryl Streep starrer Julie & Julia.
Personally, of the films she wrote and/or directed my favorite will always be You’ve Got Mail. I’m not sure what it is exactly about that film, but something about it has always made me smile.
