If you happened to be on Twitter last night it was pretty funny to read so many of the tweets people were sending out, claiming HBO’s “The Newsroom“, created by Aaron Sorkin, wasn’t as bad as all the critics were saying. The first thing that came to mind was a list I made back in 2011 headlined “Top Ten List of Worst Excuses Made for ‘Bad’ Movies” where #8 was “It’s not as bad as people said.” A lot of people were clinging to this excuse, but it’s not as simple as that.
First off, as I noted in my review of the first four episodes of “The Newsroom”, it’s not a bad show, it simply has some problems. There were, however, many critics that took it to task, which is largely where the Twitter critics were targeting their hate.
Secondly, critics were writing their reviews based on the first four episodes, not just the 75-minute pilot, which just so happens to be the best of the four. So to claim people wrong for their opinion without having seen the three additional hours of programming they saw to form that opinion is a bit silly.
That said, now you can be the judge and add your voice to the fray. Check out the first episode of the Aaron Sorkin scripted new drama, directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland) and starring Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Alison Pill, John Gallagher Jr., Sam Waterston, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn and Dev Patel. What you’ll see is an absolutely excellent opening followed by a solid pilot episode.
