Solid opening for Pixar’s Brave, coming in with $24.5 million on Friday combined with an “A” Cinemascore from audiences, which suggests this one might be around for a while considering the next big family animated feature isn’t until Ice Age: Continental Drift on July 13.
With this kind of start Pixar’s latest is looking at potentially cracking the $70 million mark for its opening weekend. When you look at the rest of the field that’s really saying something.
In second is the weekend’s other new release, but it isn’t exactly fairing so well. Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter took a hit from critics, scoring only 39% on RottenTomatoes and has opened with $6.3 million on Friday and is looking at something around a $15 million three-day weekend. I’m having a hard time figuring out if this is a good opening or terrible.
Usually 3-D films do really well overseas, but this film is about a US President that actually killed vampires. Will that play in international territories or will those audiences just not care? The film’s $69 million budget is hoping someone else cares because the “C+” Cinemascore from US audiences doesn’t bode well for its future prospects.
Also opening this weekend was Lorene Scafaria‘s Seeking a Friend for the End of the World starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley. The film scored $1.2 million from 1,625 theaters and is currently holding on to the tenth spot by the narrowest of margins over Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom, which could very easily slip into the top ten afterd adding 217 theaters this weekend bringing its total to a meager 395 theaters. Yeah, that film is killing it.
Also in limited release, only five theaters in fact, is Woody Allen‘s new film To Rome with Love and from those five theaters it hauled in $115,000 for a $23,000 per theater average. Bellissimo!
