Box-Office Oracle: ‘Prometheus’ Goes for Box-Office Win Over ‘Madagascar 3’

As we’ve got two legitimate contenders for the crown, it looks like it will be a tight race this weekend, . In one corner we’ve got the Alien prequel, Prometheus, Rated R and over two hours long. In the other corner we’ve got Madagascar 3, 90 minutes of “fun” and rated PG. Let’s sort things out…

Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 5 Weeks In A Row

Prometheus

It made $10k per theater last weekend in France, same deal in Sweden. So why will it come in at $18k per here in the States? Critical mass, both from the critics and word of mouth. I think sooooo much time has passed since the original Alien franchise there will be a curiosity from the younglings (as opposed to MIB 3 where not enough time had passed). Adjusted for inflation, Aliens only made $250 million in total, but that was good enough for 7th place for 1986. Things have changed, eh?

Still, this could just be me rooting for the film. That definitely happens, and I really appreciated it. That happened with Inception and everyone else got on board. Elizabethtown and Serenity? Not so much. Sadly, my anecdotal appreciation isn’t very predictive, and routinely betting against the family dollar is the road to madness.

Prediction: $59.4 million

I’m not sure the word Europe right there in the title helps them domestically. There are still whole portions of the U.S. that will never deign to leave the country.
Prediction: $52.5 million
It will be the biggest dipper of the weekend. Tough break!
Prediction: $26.1 million
Only $119 million domestically, but over $300 million overseas!
Prediction: $16.9 million
The only open item for The Avengers to tackle is whether or not it will be the top grossing film of 2012. Could it possibly beat The Dark Knight Rises?
Prediction: $10.9 million
At press time I didn’t have theater counts. It would be just perfect if they decided this was the weekend to get really wide, as it would make my prediction waaaaaay off.
Prediction: $3.4 million
They had to have lost money here. Hopefully the boxed set Blu-ray helps them recoup.
Prediction: $2.7 million
Could Sacha Baron Cohen go back to Ali G. next? Or is he too well known these days?
Prediction: $2.2 million
It seems clear that they’ll lose at least $100m on this project. You do that a couple of times and you won’t have to worry about doing it ever again.
Prediction: $2.1 million
I’d watch the “Behind the Music” version of where they spent the money. Heck, I think we all would.
Prediction: $1.9 million

How say you? Prometheus and Madagascar 3 are the big titles on the board, predictions away!
