It seems there is a general agreement that Michael Haneke‘s Amour is a masterful film that no one wants to return to any time soon as it spends the whole of its two hour running time dedicated to the deterioration of an elderly 80-something woman (Emmanuelle Riva) and her husband’s (Jean-Louis Trintignant) pained efforts to make sure she leaves this world peacefully with him at her side.
It’s devastating and if you’ve read my review the following two clips will give some context to everything I discussed. I think both go on for just the right length and don’t give away too much of the emotion experienced in either scene, though the second one will probably get to you a bit. As a matter of fact, as far as I’m concerned, these are actually pieces of two of the best scenes in the film.
If you haven’t yet read my review and would like to do so before watching the clips you can read it right here.
