Weekend Box-Office: ‘The Avengers’ Sunk Universal’s ‘Battleship’

I just got back from dinner following three straight movies in the midst of a torrential downpour here in Cannes so please excuse what may end up being a rushed weekend box-office wrap-up this week. However, I can’t let the dismal numbers for Battleship go unnoticed as The Avengers continues its monetary massacre of all competition in its path…

Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row

Marvel’s The Avengers

Inflation has everything to do with The Avengers being #6 on the all-time domestic box-office list and it is about to leap frog Star Wars for #5 by the end of the day Monday and probably fourth place all-time before next weekend.

The worldwide tally at this point is $1.18 billion and climbing which is enough for fourth place on that all-time list.

And, if you were wondering, with inflation taken into consideration it comes in at #61 on the all-time domestic list.

However, what may be most impressive are the week-to-week drops as it takes a pretty impressive film to take in $55 million and only have a 47% drop. Very nice.

Weekend: $55 million (-46.6% drop)

Cummulative Total: $457 million

RottenTomatoes Score: 93%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $60.5 million was $5.5m off for a percentage error of 10%.
Yikes, Laremy went with a very low $30.5 million prediction with tracking suggesting even higher and he still ended up over. Made on a reported $209 million budget and while this one has already taken in over $215 million worldwide, it still has a lot of work to do to make it to profitability.

Looking over the reader predictions, Aron and Arthur Carlson win for this title with $30 million predictions, which were the lowest on the board. Talk about a disappointment.

Weekend: $25.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 36%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $30.5 million, which is $5.2m off for a 20.55% error.
Laremy was more or less spot on with this one as the Wednesday opener did what it could, but that $65 million budget means this one is now going to depend on international receipts, which were kind to both Bruno and Borat, but both of those also opened better than The Dictator.

Looking over reader predictions, Pockets O’tool was $200,000 shy of perfect with a solid $17.2 million prediction.

Weekend: $17.4 million / Cume: $24.4 million / RottenTomatoes: 61%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $18 million, which is $0.6m off for a 3.45% error.
It didn’t tumble as far as 60%, which is what it was looking like after Friday’s numbers, but after a soft opening to dip this far in its second weekend is not a good sign, especially considering that $150 million price tag.
Weekend: $12.7 million (-57.1% drop) / Cume: $50.9 million / RottenTomatoes: 41%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $13.6 million, which is $0.9m off for a 7.09% error.
I have little to say about this title, but it does seem to prove Brooklyn Decker isn’t putting asses in seats just as Taylor Kitsch isn’t.
Weekend: $10.5 million / RottenTomatoes: 22%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $13.5 million, which is $3m off for a 28.57% error.
With $75.7 million already taken in at the international box-office, this one was a winner before domestic audiences even had a chance to see it.
Weekend: $3.2 million (23.1% increase) / Cume: $8.2 million / RottenTomatoes: 76%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $4 million, which is $0.8m off for a 25% error.
Remember Hunger Games? It was a big story for a while there.
Weekend: $3 million (-33% drop) / Cume: $391.6 million / RottenTomatoes: 84%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $2.8 million, which is $0.2m off for a 6.67% error.
Another solid return on investment thanks to a paltry $12 million budget.
Weekend: $2.7 million (-53.4% drop) / Cume: $85.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 51%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $4.4 million, which is $1.7m off for a 62.96% error.
The true lucky one is anyone that hasn’t seen this movie. *rim shot*
Weekend: $1.7 million (-58.5% drop) / Cume: $56.9 million / RottenTomatoes: 20%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $2.4 million, which is $0.7m off for a 41.18% error.
I wonder if Aardman will ever make another Wallace and Gromit feature film.
Weekend: $1.4 million (-54.8% drop) / Cume: $25.3 million / RottenTomatoes: 86%

Laremy’s rank: Not Ranked

Let’s imagine The Avengers drops around 47% again next weekend, which would give it around $30 million for the weekend. Men in Black III is the clear competition for that top spot and I think it will take out Iron Man and the gang, ending their number one run at three weeks. What do you think?
