Weekend Box-Office: ‘Hunger Games’ Makes It Four in a Row Reaching $531 Million Worldwide

There you have it folks, the first film to take #1 at the box-office four weeks in a row since Avatar did it back in 2010 is The Hunger Games and it has done so in impressive fashion. Let’s take a look at how this weekend ended up.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 7 Weeks In A Row
With $21.5 million, The Hunger Games scores a #1 position with a 35% drop from last weekend. The film is now over $337 million all-time placing it 22nd on the all-time domestic list passing Spider-Man 3 and putting it only $43.9 million behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, last year’s highest grossing film. Any chance it can beat it?
I’m also looking at the all-time domestic list and along with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, this is the only female-led film in the top 25 at the all-time box-office. Interesting.
Overall, the film has reached $531 million worldwide, which puts it in 85th all-time. I’m not sure it has enough juice to top Kung Fu Panda 2‘s $665.7 million mark to enter the top 50, but it is definitely doing quite well.
Weekend: $21.5 million (35.1% drop) Cummulative Total: $337 million RottenTomatoes Score:84% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $18.21 million was $3.29m off for a percentage error of 15.3%.
Coming up second the Farrelly brothers score quite well with The Three Stooges coming in at expectation with $17.1 million and making Laremy look really good with his $17 million prediction. On the reader side of things, Rach was the closest with his $16.4 million prediction as I think interest in this flick from most readers around these parts played a large role in lower expectations for its potential.
Reviews for the film were largely negative, but there seemed to be some support for those familiar with the 80-year-old franchise. Personally my interest was limited and I couldn’t bring myself to see it. I’m sure my response would be, “It wasn’t as bad as I expected,” but is that any reason to pay today’s ticket prices?
Weekend: $17.1 million / RottenTomatoes:43% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $17 million, which is $0.1m off for a 0.58% error.
Alternatively, while most expected Stooges to quickly fade, they also expected Cabin in the Woods to rise over the weekend, but a “C” CinemaScore from audience members shows they weren’t exactly enamored with the horror deconstruction as it managed only $14.8 million for the weekend.
Laremy was almost spot on once again with his prediction and readers ranged from $11.2 million to $23.4 million, but it was Anthony Caban’s $15 million prediction that came closest.
Weekend: $14.8 million / RottenTomatoes:92% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $15.6 million, which is $0.8m off for a 5.41% error.
In fourth was James Cameron‘s return to Titanic, holding rather well with only a 32% drop from last weekend as the 3-D return has now added $44.4 million to the film’s all-time tally to $645.2 million.
Weekend: $11.6 million (-32.6% drop) / Cume: $44.4 million / RottenTomatoes:87% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $9.7 million, which is $1.9m off for a 16.38% error.
A 50% drop sounds about right and this thing is unlikely to match its predecessors and will likely miss that $100 million mark. Any chance they try for another all-cast reunion in the future?
Weekend: $10.7 million (-50.2% drop) / Cume: $39.9 million / RottenTomatoes:43% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $10.4 million, which is $0.3m off for a 2.8% error.
Closing in on $50 million domestically and $90 million worldwide. Looks like the bar has been set for Snow White and the Huntsman, which I expect will easily become the higher grossing Snow White feature… for this year.
Weekend: $7 million (-36.4% drop) / Cume: $49.4 million / RottenTomatoes:49% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $7.1 million, which is $0.1m off for a 1.43% error.
Let’s hear it for Wrath of the Titans! It only took 12 days to do what its predecessor did in three! Lucky for this $150 million production the international dollars are starting to come in and it is now up to $222 million worldwide as of publishing this article, but it still has a ways to go.
Weekend: $6.9 million (-53.1% drop) / Cume: $71.2 million / RottenTomatoes:23% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $6.7 million, which is $0.2m off for a 2.9% error.
$120 million on a $42 million budget is more like it and the $27+ million from international ticket sales is just gravy at this point.
Weekend: $6.8 million (-32% drop) / Cume: $120.5 million / RottenTomatoes:85% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $6.5 million, which is $0.3m off for a 4.41% error.
I gave this film a C-. It really deserves an D if you look at it purely from a quality standpoint, but even while seeing a few TV spots over the weekend I couldn’t help but feel some level of appreciation for its stupidity. I would watch it again, but preferably from the cheap seats in my living room.
Weekend: $6.2 million / RottenTomatoes:33% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $8.1 million, which is $1.9m off for a 30.65% error.
It’s finally time we bid farewell to The Lorax. Universal has essentially said they don’t plan on a sequel for the film, but will continue to mine the Seuss archives for more CG-animated features. Yay.
Weekend: $3 million (-40% drop) / Cume: $204.4 million / RottenTomatoes:57% Laremy’s rank: Not Ranked
Elsewhere, all the hub bub over Bully‘s PG-13 rating scored it a mere $534,000 from 158 theaters for a $3,380 average. I”m not sure if that’s good or bad, but I don’t really care at this point.
Blue Like Jazz brought in $281,000 from 136 theaters ($2,066 average), but the biggest story on the limited release front is The Raid: Redemption pulling in just over $1 million from 881 theaters.
Next weekend, The Hunger Games‘s bid for five weeks in a row will be contested by Zac Efron’s The Lucky One and a film I fully expect to perform quite well, Think Like a Man. Look into your crystal balls, will Hunger Games make it five-in-a-row or is it time at the top over and done with?
