“What have I to fear?” Loki asks.
“The Avengers,” replies Stark, very matter-of-fact. Then, recognizing how stupid it sounds, he adds with a roll of the eyes, “It’s what we call ourselves. It’s sort of like a team.”
It has become commonplace for today’s films to be very self-aware. It’s a way for filmmakers to give themselves an out as if to say, “Yes, we realize it sounds sort of stupid, but let’s just roll with it because once we get this out of the way it gets really good.”
We saw a lot of this in 21 Jump Street, to a fault some of the time, and the more ridiculous films get the more of this we’re going to get. However, very few people will be able to deliver the line as well as Robert Downey Jr. does in this new clip from The Avengers as he chats it up with the film’s villain Loki (Tom Hiddleston).
The Avengers is set to hit theaters on May 4, which is when it will continue the big-screen adventures started in Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel’s The Avengers is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.
The film is directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Cobie Smulders, Stellan Skarsgard and Tom Hiddleston.
