Hugh Jackman has tweeted what I am choosing to call the first official look at him in character in Tom Hooper‘s Les Miserables.
Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Miserables tells the story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.
The story is based on the 1862 French novel by Victor Hugo and the screenplay was a collective effort by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg who were responsible for the original stage musical along with Herbert Kretzmer and William Nicholson, the latter of which co-wrote Gladiator and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
Universal will release the film on December 14 and it co-stars Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and Amanda Seyfried
