I’m frustrated I missed seeing Salmon Fishing in the Yemen while I was in Toronto back in September, but scheduling conflicts will cause such problems as I wasn’t about to miss my only opportunity at the festival to see the much talked about Shame. As it turns out, no harm has come of it as CBS Films quickly snatched up the well-received drama and will release Salmon Fishing in the Yemen on March 2, 2012 and they’ve chosen today to debut the first trailer.
Written by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) and directed by Lasse Hallstrom (Chocolat), the film is based on Paul Torday’s acclaimed novel about a visionary sheik who dreams of bringing salmon fishing to the desert. Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn his dream into reality, an extraordinary feat that will require the involvement of Britain’s leading fisheries expert who happens to think the project both absurd and unachievable. That is, until the Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary latches on for its potential as a ‘good will’ story. Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.
The cast includes Kristin Scott Thomas, Ewan McGregor, Emily Blunt, Amr Waked and Tom Mison and, as I said, the film will hit theaters on March 2, 2012.
