Box-Office Oracle: It’s a Scary Looking Weekend as ‘The Muppets’ are Predicted to Topple ‘Twilight’

All you need to know about this weekend is that Jack and Jill is gaining theaters. Cue the scene from Gladiator with me as Russell Crowe, “ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??”

The Muppets

How bad is this weekend? Well, if it had happened like this in 2010 it would have been the third worst weekend of the year. Unfortunately, 2011 has put up some truly dismal weekends, as such this will only only be the sixth or seventh worst weekend with a cumulative top twelve equaling around $88m. No new wide releases, and in fact titles such as Moneyball and Ides of March are gaining 800 theaters in an attempt to sway some voters and take advantage of the vacuum.

Bright side, Muppets is feeling like the only certain thing on the board this week. With a minimalist production budget under $50m The Muppets is well positioned to see solid profit. Jason Segel did this one right, though it will need to hit nearly $200m (or around $150m more) in ticket sales to match 1979’s Muppet Movie (adjusted for inflation). Not gonna happen.

Prediction: $16.75 million

I don’t think it catches New Moon or Eclipse domestically or internationally.
Prediction: $15.34 million
This one might start making its Best Picture run this weekend. It’s got that sneaky King’s Speech vibe going.
Prediction: $7.65 million
It wasn’t very good, which seems to have hurt it. Looks like the franchise ends here.
Prediction: $6.82 million
My guess is they spent very little coin, and so the $40m worldwide is a decent number for Sony.
Prediction: $6.39 million
6. Hugo
Just won the National Board of Review’s Best Film award, but that doesn’t have much correlation with Best Picture. I’ve got them two for ten (Slumdog, No Country) over the past decade.
Prediction: $6.012 million
Gaining 20 theaters this weekend! Inexplicable. I’m like Morgan Freeman in Shawshank right now, I just want to sit the theater owners down and talk some sense into them.
Prediction: $5.83 million
$161m on a production budget of $75m. So let’s call it a tweener on profitability at this point.
Prediction: $4.82 million
Five weeks and $200m later, this looks poised to crack the top 25 of 2011 in worldwide earnings.
Prediction: $4.12 million
Did you know Tintin has already cleared $200m internationally. Crazy town, right?
Prediction: $4.06 million

How say you? Nothing massive to predict, so let’s go with Muppets vs. Breaking Dawn: Part One at the top and your “Yes/No” call on whether Breaking Dawn can still crack $650m worldwide. Predictions away!
