Watch the ‘Jar Jar-less’ 3D Trailer for ‘Star Wars: The Phantom Menace’

I think the teaser below the headline is more than enough to get across my opinion of the prequel films in general. If there has ever been a film I made excuses for when I first saw it, it was Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.

I don’t remember what my first impression was of Attack of the Clones and then I gave Revenge of the Sith a B- when I reviewed it, a grade that still seems about right considering it is the only one I have rewatched since seeing any of them in theaters… At least, it’s the only one I have been able to entirely rewatch as I have tried to watch the others but become too frustrated to watch them in their entirety. Yet, I am somehow interested in seeing The Phantom Menace in 3D. Not interested enough to pay for it myself, but interested to where I would watch it for free. I know Kevin Smith frowns on film critics seeing films for free, but it’s the only way you’re going to get me in the theater for this one.

Today the first trailer for the film has arrived online and while it supposedly debuted in front of screenings of The Three Musketeers over the weekend it didn’t show in front of mine so this was the first time I’m seeing it as well. Thing is, without the 3D it’s nothing more than just another Phantom Menace trailer, which makes me wonder how many people Fox and Lucasfilm will be able to convince to go see this that aren’t already die hard Star Wars fans.

When Disney re-released The Lion King the 2D trailers were reminding people of a film they originally loved and simply could go enjoy again, this time in 3D. With this trailer it shows almost everything people remember about the first one.. granted, there is no Jar Jar Binks. Smart move.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace hits theaters in 3D on February 10, 2012. You going?
