Box-Office Wrap-Up: ‘Contagion’ Tops the Weekend While ‘Warrior’ Stalls

Just got back and I’ve already seen three movies so far today in Toronto (Rampart, Damsels in Distress and Friends with Kids) and I will be getting to work on those reviews soon enough, but first let’s talk a little box-office…
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 1 Weeks In A Row

Contagion

The only movie that managed to crack the double-digit mark this weekend is Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion and it actually performed quite nicely following $8 million on Friday. However, the B- CinemaScore is something of a concern as word of mouth may not be strong enough to make for very long legs for the pic, which is said to carry a production budget of $60 million before prints and advertising.

As far as predictions go, Laremy was close and on the reader end a lot of you were really close, but Winchester scored the closest prediction at $23 million even.

Weekend: $23.1 million

RottenTomatoes Score: 82%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $20.15 million was $2.95m off for a percentage error of 12.77%.
Laremy was a little bullish on this title, but it is still holding strong. Just how long do you think it will remain in the top ten? There are certainly enough films coming up that will push it further down the line, but can it outlast them in the long run?
Weekend: $8.6 million (-41.1% drop) / Cume: $137 million / RottenTomatoes: 73%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $10.8 million, which is $2.2m off for a 25.58% error.
People seemed excited for this film on the Internet, but a $5.6 million return from 1,869 theaters isn’t going to cut it. Laremy had it placing third, but the margin with which he was off was actually more than this film made in any of its three opening days.

As for reader predictions, some of you went as high as $20 million and only a couple people picked it to finish sub-$10 million, the closest of which was Chris Etrata with an $8.7 million prediction.

Weekend: $5.6 million / RottenTomatoes: 82%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $9.35 million, which is $3.75m off for a 66.96% error.
I am surprised to see how well this film has done considering the major delay in release and, from what I can tell, was a minuscule marketing campaign. However, it was delayed due to studio woes and not quality, which always help make for a better performance with audiences.
Weekend: $4.9 million (-50.5% drop) / Cume: $21.9 million / RottenTomatoes: 76%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $5.95 million, which is $1.05m off for a 21.43% error.
I wonder what will end up with more at the box-office, this or Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire releasing in January.
Weekend: $4 million (-45.9% drop) / Cume: $29.7 million / RottenTomatoes: 29%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $5.82 million, which is $1.82m off for a 45.5% error.
Still no sequel announcement, maybe there will be no sequel, maybe the apes took over and banned movies in the future.
Weekend: $3.8 million (-51.9% drop) / Cume: $167.8 million / RottenTomatoes: 82%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #6 with $5.06 million, which is $1.26m off for a 33.16% error.
Now we’re getting into the big dippers. You think Piranha 3DD will blow Shark Night‘s total out of the water in November? My vote is for YES.
Weekend: $3.5 million (-57.8% drop) / Cume: $14.7 million / RottenTomatoes: 13%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #10 with $3.7 million, which is $0.2m off for a 5.71% error.
It’s strange, my article exploring the conspiracy posed by this film is still getting a lot of reads and based on the box-office take more people may be reading that article than are actually watching the movie.
Weekend: $2.9 million (-66.7% drop) / Cume: $15 million / RottenTomatoes: 21%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #8 with $4 million, which is $1.1m off for a 37.93% error.
Solid movie, if it’s in theaters near you seek it out.
Weekend: $2.7 million (-50% drop) / Cume: $21.4 million / RottenTomatoes: 68%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #7 with $4.63 million, which is $1.93m off for a 71.48% error.
Stick a fork in these kids…
Weekend: $2.5 million (-47.9% drop) / Cume: $34.2 million / RottenTomatoes: 22%

Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.71 million, which is $1.21m off for a 48.4% error.

In other box-office news, Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star bombed in a major, major way bringing in only $1.45 million and opening in 15th place. To put that in some kind of perspective, in 13th is the Kevin Hart concert feature Laugh at My Pain with $2 million. The big difference between the two is Bucky Larson was in 1,403 more theaters.

Another non-starter is Bubble Distribution’s Creature, opening in 1,507 theaters and managing a paltry $331,000.

Next week sees the release of Drive (2,400 est. theaters), I Don’t Know How She Does It (2,800 est. theaters), Restless, Straw Dogs (2,400 est. theaters) and the re-release of The Lion King in 3D in an estimated 2,200 theaters. Want to make any early predictions?
